London: for James Carpenter and William Miller, 1811. 4to. Extra-illustrated with 64 engraved portraits by Edward Scriven and others, as well as over 100 other engraved portraits. Late 19th or early 20th-century full dark blue crushed levant, richly decorated in gilt, front joint of first volume rubbed, boards lightly worn; all edges gilt; gilt dentelles; dark blue and white shot silk doublures and free end leaves; by The Club Bindery; some offsetting from plates, scattered light foxing to text; book-plate of Roderick Terry on first free marbled leaf in each volume, residue from removed book-plate to same.
These memoirs chiefly relate to British court life at the time of Charles II, describing the love affairs of the King and many of the courtiers.
The Club Bindery was founded in 1895 by Edwin Holden, Robert Hoe, and other wealthy American bibliophiles, most of whom were members of the Grolier Club. The purpose of the bindery was to be able to provide bindings of a quality equal or greater to those available in Europe, while avoiding the delays and other inconveniences of having to send books abroad. Despite exerting a considerable influence on fine binding in America the Club Bindery closed in April of 1909.
