One of 145 copies on American hand-made paper, of 148 copies incorporating, in a back cover pocket, a leaf from the the Ashburnham copy of the first edition of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales printed by William Caxton ca. 1476-1478. 4to. Illustrated with frontispiece and 25 plates. Publisher's olive boards, red cloth shelf-back, paper spine label, edges untrimmed; with corners slightly bumped, light edge wear, small unobtrusive stain on back cover, and spine label lightly rubbed, text block generally clean.
Grolier Club, Bibliographical Notes on One Hundred Books Famous in English Literature, New York, 1903, catalogue no.1, “...According to the arrangement of William Blades, this is the tenth work of England‘s first printer and the fifth printed on English soil...Nine copies known; ...only two are in perfect [complete] condition.”
