After training and working with Minton's, George Jones established his pottery in Stoke-on-Trent in 1861; by 1871 he employed nearly 600 workers. His majolica incorporated playful details that distinguish his work from the more restrained approach exhibited by Minton. Here that quality is demonstrated by the incorporation of the chick beneath the woodcock's wing. A second variation of this game pie dish exists; in it, the woodcock surmounting the cover is depicted with an empty nest.
