Contains a description of Darwin's theory of heredity which he called pangenesis. Darwin's daughter Henrietta Emma Darwin helped edit the manuscript; writing to her he averred, "All your remarks, criticisms, doubts and contradictions are excellent, excellent, excellent." Darwin's misgivings about the length of the published book led him to write, "If I try to read a few pages I feel fairly nauseated. The devil take the whole book."
