[Americana] [Morris, Robert] Biddle, Clement
Signed Land Deed

Washington County, Georgia, September 15,1793. Land deed, signed in a secretarial hand, on vellum for 11, 000 acres from a John Jones to Founding Father Robert Morris, signed by Philadelphia notary public, Clement Biddle, seal intact at same. Creasing from original folds. 27 1/2 x 25 1/2 in. (698 x 648 mm).

After the American Revolution, Robert Morris (1734-1806), "Financier of the Revolution", heavily speculated in land, at one point owning millions of acres in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and in Georgia with the intent of selling quickly at a profit. Through this process Morris incurred large amounts debt, and after a series of failed business partnerships, and failing to sell off the tracts of land, he ultimately declared bankruptcy.

Clement Biddle (1740-1814) was a Philadelphia-born American Revolutionary soldier, first U.S. Marshal of Pennsylvania, and served as a notary public after 1790.
