George Jones' work is often, but not always marked. Much of Jones' majolica may be identified by the motifs he repeated on wares of different forms. This game-pie dish and cover exhibits two characteristic Jones' motifs, the stiff acanthus leaf decorating the frieze and stand, and the twisted cable ornamenting the edge. This tureen exhibits a slight variation on the acanthus motif, interspersing the stiff leaves with wheat stalks. The acanthus and cable motifs are also found on the George Jones majolica sardine dish, lot 70. The same acanthus and wheat variation may be found on a similar George Jones game-pie dish sold by Bonham's Chester, November 20, 2012.
