The backboard bears two labels: "Portrait of Rachel Hill daughter of Richard Hill of Madeira, born-1734. Married Richard Wells at Philadelphia (father of Gideon H. Wells) in 1759. Died in May 1796 aged 62. This picture was painted in 1750 when she was 16 years old." The second label: "Gideon Hill Wells was the father of Richard Waln Wells who was the father of Guilliam...Wells."
