Illustrated with engraved frontispieces and engraved plates in two states, by Howard Pyle, W.H.W. Bicknell, James Fagan, and Edmund Garrett, with the first state of each plate signed by the artist in pencil, and each with a captioned tissue guard; numerous head- and tail-pieces, and other in-text illustrations, and photographic reproductions in the final volume. Beautifully bound in full brown crushed levant, elaborately tooled in a gilt foliate pattern with red and green onlay, scattered light soiling to boards, scattered rubbing to joints and extremities, spines variously faded; top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed; matching gilt foliate dentelles; marbled endpapers.
