Note
Joellyn Toler Duesberry is nationally recognized for her dynamic landscape paintings. Her canvases are remarkable for their rich and intense use of color, and for her distinct interest in the geometry of the various landscapes she interprets. She has said that she draws inspiration from the work of John Marin and Milton Avery. Concerning her own style she states "I am not interested in a realist painting, I am not interested in an abstract painting. I am interested in the tension." Her work reflects her deep love for land which was cultivated growing up in rural Virginia and further grown in her later home state of Colorado.Duesberry frequently painted plein air and would begin her work outdoors to later finish in the studio. Her use of light, shadow, scale and texture create paintings that are both visually and emotionally poignant.
