Compiled by Richard Walter. Bound in 19th-century three-quarter red morocco and pebbled red cloth, spines gilt, marbled endpapers, light wear to extremities; interior with some minor spotting and light offsetting, else generally clean and bright. With the book-plate of Frederick Barne on front paste-down in each volume and with his signature, dated 1874, at top of title-page. Sabin 1626; ESTC T89475 While Great Britain was at war with Spain in 1740, Commodore George Anson led a squadron of eight ships on a mission to capture Spain's Pacific possessions. Anson completed a circumnavigation of the globe by returning to Britain in 1744. The voyage was notable for the capture of an Acapulco galleon but also for horrific losses due to disease; only 188 of the 1,854 members of the expedition returned to Britain. Frederick Barne (1805-1886) was a British land owner, member of parliament, caricatured by Spy.
