Modeled as a seated "Chinaman" in pale blue embroidered jacket, his head the cover and his long hair plaited to form the handle, hugging a noh mask issuing a green spout, impressed with year cypher for 1877 and shape number "1838" to base.

Minton drew its repertory of majolica motifs from a variety of sources ranging from renaissance pallissy ware to contemporary styles. The modelling of this teapot in the form of a 'Chinaman' with noh mask demonstrates the Victorian fascination with japonisme.
