Gabriel de Magalhães (1609-1677) was an early Portuguese Jesuit missionary to China, and a member of the same family as Ferdinand Magellan. The present work, dealing with numerous aspects of Chinese history and culture was originally written in Portuguese and first published in 1688 in French with the author's name Gallicized.
