According to family history, the William & Mary chair was originally owned by Mrs. Ironsides, supposed daughter of Oliver Cromwell, and acquired by Mary Lee Fitzhugh Custis (Mrs. George Washington Parke Custis, 1788-1853). It was given to John Rogers Murray (1811-1881) and descended to his adopted niece, Elizabeth du Bois Vail Ledyard (Mrs. Lambertus Withers Ledyard, 1840-1901), thence to her daughter, Elizabeth Murray Ledyard Burr (Mrs. Jacob Henry Ten Eyck Burr, 1868-1950).
