Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1906. In 20 volumes. Manuscript Edition, #160/600 numbered sets, signed by the publisher, and with an autograph manuscript leaf by Thoreau bound in first volume, containing approximately 59 lines from the ninth chapter of Cape Cod, his fifth published book (see lot 58), and with his numerous emendations. Illustrated with 103 photogravures printed on heavy stock paper, by Herbert W. Gleason. Publisher's three-quarter green levant over marbled paper-covered boards, spine elaborately gilt; top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed; matching marbled endpapers; many pages unopened. Borst B 3; BAL 20145
As complete original manuscripts by Thoreau are virtually unobtainable, the Manuscript Edition of his works are prized for their unique individual manuscript leaves. This edition is also the first to feature Thoreau's entire Journal, in 14 volumes.
A near-fine example of the most desirable edition of Thoreau's complete works.
