Note: Minnesota was admitted to the Union, May 11, 1858, under James Buchanan. This unusual arrangement of 32 stars in 4 rows of 8 has created a long narrow canton. The canton rests on a red, so-called "blood" or "war" stripe. This Flag was official during the Indian Wars of the late 1850s and 1860s.
