In 1922, Mulhaupt settled permanently on the Cape Ann peninsula. Thereafter, he depicted the region in a hybrid style of Impressionism and Realism, celebrating its rugged landscapes and bustling seaports in a series of mall-scale works. Paintings like Gloucester Boats shimmer with the atmospheric nuances of Massachusetts' northeastern coast, hinting at its changing seasons and moods. Mulhaupt wasn't just a chronicler; he was an interpreter, weaving architecture, sea, and sunlight into a visual narrative where nature and humanity coexist. Here, staccato brushwork and dappled surfaces animate Gloucester harbor, from its fleet of fishing boats to the weather-beaten beauty of its docks.
