NOTE:
Born in New York's Finger Lakes region, Arthur Dove gave up law studies to pursue art, initially working as an illustrator before traveling to France in 1907 where he was exposed to and influenced by the work of the Fauves and Paul Cézanne. Upon his return to the United States, Dove established a long-lasting association with Alfred Stieglitz, who exhibited the artist's work at his galleries in New York. In 1934, he and his second wife, fellow artist Helen Torr, moved to Geneva, New York, Dove's hometown, to settle his mother's estate, after which they returned to Long Island in 1938. They proceeded to purchase a small cottage on Titus Mill Pond in Centerport where they lived out their days together. The present lot, titled "Centerport" is likely an abstracted depiction of the aforementioned cottage and its environs.
