NOTE:
Between his frequent trips to Europe throughout his career, Hassam almost always returned to New York City. Equally adept at capturing urban life as sumptuous rural landscapes, he made several trips to Newburgh, the quiet commuter town nestled on the west bank of Hudson River, about sixty miles north of Manhattan. Reachable by ferry from across the river at Beacon, Newburgh's hilly terrain provided gorgeous vistas of the Hudson and a striking backdrop against which to paint. Hassam made several watercolors and oil paintings of the town, its architecture and environs, including the present piece, which he executed in 1914.
This present work will be included in Stuart P. Feld and Kathleen M. Burnside's forthcoming Catalogue Raisonné of the artist's work. We wish to thank Kathleen M. Burnside for her kind assistance in cataloguing this lot.
