Partly-printed document, signed by Millard Fillmore as Comptroller of the State of New York appointing "R. Withers Esq Cashier my true and lawful attorney, for me and in my name to transfer unto Edward Whitehouse Ten thousand dollars of the stock issued for a Loan made in behalf of the State of New York...redeemable in the year 1852"; docketed on verso: "Comptroller to Edward Whitehouse Certificate No. 118. Bonds of 1852." Creasing from old folds; lightly toned. In mat with portrait of Fillmore, and in frame, 15 1/8 x 20 in. (384 x 508 mm).

Autograph letter, signed by James Buchanan as Secretary of State to "General Jones", likely Adjutant General of the U.S. Army, Roger Jones (1789-1852): "Dear Sir//Lieutenant Andrew Ross died at sea/on board the Ship New Orleans on his return home./This fact is stated in the Pennslyvanian of the 17th/Instant on the authority of New Orleans papers. It has/been published in the Pennsylvania papers generally./Jacob Brua is a private in the Cameron/Guards, second Regiment of Penna volunteers & is now/in Mexico. I was incorrect in supposing him to be/35 or 40 years of age. A gentleman in my office who knows/him well says he is from 28 to 30; & an unmarried/man. His character is excellent./Yours very respectfully,/James Buchanan/General Jones". Creasing from old folds; ink smear; small tear to the lower right.
