Second edition of Austen's first-published novel, the work she chose over Pride and Prejudice “to launch her career as a published writer” (ODNB). The first edition appeared in 1811, attributed on the title-pages to a “Lady”. Austen “introduced several alterations into the text” of the second edition (Keynes).
