Gotzenbilder der Mandan Indianer...Idols of the Mandan Indians
Coblenz: J. Holscher/London: Published by Ackermann & Co./Paris: Arthus Bertrand, (1839-42). Tab 25. Hand-colored aquatint engraving by Himley after Bodmer; “C. Bodmer” blindstamp below title. 24 3/4 x 18 in. (629 x 457 mm). Minor creasing in top left edge. Graff 4648; Howes M-443a; Pilling 2521; Sabin 47014; Wagner-Camp 76:1
A rich and atmospheric scene, completed by Bodmer during the winter of 1833-34 at Fort Clark in the upper reaches of the Missouri River. The two hide-wrapped poles represent the sun and the moon, symbols for two of the most powerful Mandan deities, the Lord of Life (creator of all things) and the Old Woman Who Never Dies (associated with corn and buffalo). Before these figures stands a Mandan seeking guidance. From Bodmer's Travels in the Interior of North America.
A fine example.
