Partially-printed military commission, signed by John Hancock as governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, for George Hawes, appointing him “Captain of a Company in the fifth Regiment” of the Massachusetts militia; counter-signed by Secretary John Avery; inscribed on verso by General Oliver Pond, affirming Hawes took his oath, dated Norfolk, September 4, 1793. Large paper seal intact in top left.
