Note
Lilian MacKendrick grew up in New York City and was the daughter of Russian emigrants. After graduating from New York University with a degree in Fine Arts, she went on to study at City College of New York and at the Art Students League. Through her studies she developed a preference for the Oriental style rather than American and European painting as she found the latter "too violent.” She became known for her bold style which blends eastern and western. Her work has been called 'singular and striking'. Many of her paintings feature exuberant color and extensive patterning. She had numerous exhibitions and her work is in the permanent collections of the Hirshhorn, Wadsworth Atheneum, and MMA, among others.
