According to oral history, this rug was made by the daughters of William and Mary Quincy Donnison in Boston, Massachsuetts about 1808 in a house at the corner of Washington and Winter Streets. Catherine (1790-1878) and Elizabeth (?-1876) are described in an article in The New England Magazine, Volume 17, "as favorites in society in Boston and Salem." Elizabeth married Richard Manning Hodges in 1821. Their father, originally from Rhode Island, was made an aid to Governor John Hancock in 1786 and in 1788 appointed adjutant General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Militia. He held that position for 25 years.
