note:
This painting most likely dates from the mid-1930s, when the artist consistently worked near the town of Langres, about 200 miles to the southeast of Paris. Dufy offers a birds-eye view of the undulating landscape, using a variety of tones and hues to indicate different parts of the composition. In 1935 Dufy developed an innovative technique whereby his oil paintings were comparable in effect to watercolors, painting in thinner layers thus allowing light to travel through easily. This painting is an early example of the style, which he was to use for the rest of his career.
This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné being prepared by Fanny Guillon-Lafaille.
