The editor of these papers, Thomas Jefferson Randolph, 1792-1875, was Thomas Jefferson's oldest grandson. Near the end of Jefferson's life, Randolph helped manage Monticello and was later executor of Jefferson's estate. He also ordered the sale of Monticello, including that of its 130 slaves, with the exception of Sally Hemings and her children, who were freed.
