Freeman's

Illustration Art

Illustration art has seen a dramatic upsurge of interest in recent years. Freeman's team of specialists of this genre have established an international reputation for their sales of illustrated art works by significant American artists at our Philadelphia based and online auctions. Their knowledge of art and its current market are essential to the overall successful sale of the works of leading illustrators such as Violet Oakley, Enoch Bolles, N.C. Wyeth, and Norman Rockwell. Freeman's generally offers a selection of illustrated art within their American Art sales and has a strong track record of achieving excellent prices.

The city of Philadelphia possesses close ties to many of the nation’s leading illustrators. The Curtis Publishing Company, home of the Saturday Evening Post, was based in Philadelphia, for which Norman Rockwell produced the artwork for many of its covers. A recent Freeman’s success came by way of a Maxfield Parrish painting, which sold for $317,000 in December, 2015. A native of Philadelphia, Parrish attended Haverford College, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Drexel Institute of Art, Science of Industry (now Drexel University). His educational background roots him deeply as a Philadelphian whose unique style, adept skill, and unmatched popularity helped to shape not only what Norman Rockwell referred to as "the Golden Age of Illustration", but the future of American visual arts as a whole. The nearby Brandywine School of Illustration, founded by Howard Pyle, was home to such luminaries as N. C. Wyeth, Harvey Dunn and Frank Schoonover. Freeman’s has seen high success with a number of works by N.C. Wyeth from the collection of the Wilmington Institute Library in Wilmington, Delaware. Later years would see the rise of “pinup” and “pulp” illustrators such as Enoch Bolles and Gil Elvgren, both of whom have also found a ready market at our auctions. Works from "Red Rose Girls" Jessie Willcox Smith and Elizabeth Shippen Green have also met with success at auctions of significant American art.

Through our website, Freeman’s has become a leader in hosting online auctions for buying and selling iIlustration art. To make an appointment for a private and complimentary consultation about illustration art, please contact one of our specialists.
