Old Master Drawings & Prints
Freeman’s has handled Old Master drawings and prints since its founding in 1805. Today, the international reputation of our specialists for sales in this field is firmly established, not only through our Philadelphia-based auction house, but online as well. Essential to the overall success of each of these auctions is the knowledge of the art itself and of the current market by the Old Master Drawings & Prints department specialists. They apply a combination of expertise and international exposure that maximizes positive results for both private buyers and discriminating collectors.
Often taking center stage at these sales are works by masters such as Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Giulio Romano. Freeman’s has recently seen very strong results in this category, which comes at the front of the European Art & Old Masters auction, setting the tone and pace for the rest of the sale. Highlights of sales of Old Master Drawings & Prints have included an album page attributed to Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, selling for $23,750, and a figural sketch from the Circle of Renaissance Master, Michelangelo, which brought $37,500. In the French Drawing category— a sketch of a woman, originally attributed to Charles Antoine Coypel, sold for an astounding $230,500. Department Head David Weiss has frequently been featured discussing works by European artists on the popular TV show, Antiques Roadshow.
Freeman’s has two Old Master Drawings & Prints auctions each year in June and January. Through our website, we have become a leader in hosting online sales for buying and selling these works.
