American Art & Pennsylvania Impressionists

American Furniture, Folk & Decorative Arts

Freeman’s American Furniture, Folk & Decorative Arts department specialists provide expert advice on single items or on large collections of material dating from the early eighteenth-century through the twentieth-century. Holding two sales annually, in April and November, the department is primarily focused on American Furniture and decorative arts, American folk art, silver and American Indian works of art. A book sale was Freeman’s first significant auction upon its opening in 1805. As the first “purpose-built” auction house in the United States, Freeman’s Books, Maps & Manuscripts Department enjoys the privilege of continuing this tradition in the welcoming environment of its current location (since 1924) on Chestnut Street in the heart of Philadelphia. Our team of experts, led by Department Head David Bloom, provides quality of service that remains unchanged since its opening over 200 years ago.

Silver & Objets de Vertu

Freeman’s has been selling silver and objets de vertu for seven generations and is now conducting auctions dedicated to this genre. The bi-annual Silver & Objets de Vertu auction is conducted every spring and fall and includes works of American, English, and Continental silver from the seventeenth to the nineteenth-centuries, as well as Modern and Post-War pieces by well-known makers such as Buccellati, Tiffany, and Georg Jensen. In addition to fine tableware, centerpieces, candelabra, and flatware services, these auctions also highlight 'objets de vertu,' such as Russian enamel, gold boxes, scent bottles, and card and cigarette cases.

The Pennsylvania Sale

Freeman’s is committed to the craftsmanship and artistry of our Commonwealth. As America’s oldest auction house, founded in Philadelphia in 1805, we celebrate the Quaker state’s legacy each November with The Pennsylvania Sale. This annual auction features an array of works made and used in Pennsylvania from the earliest Colonial period through the 20th century. Collectors will find historical manuscripts and documents, furniture, silver, folk and decorative arts as well as studio and contemporary design highlighted in this unique auction.

Freeman’s Musical Instruments department is led by Frederick Oster, who is an internationally recognized authority on the violin family and American fretted instruments such as acoustic guitars, mandolins, and banjos. He brings more than 40 years of experience in the appraisal, certification, dealing, and restoration of fine and historically important musical instruments, dating as far back as the 17th century to Freeman's.
