Freeman 's Debut Art + Design Sale Achieves $1.1 Million and Sets a Record

It was full sale room at Freeman 's debut Art + Design auction on March 20th, where enthusiastic collectors gathered to bid on choice 20th century design and studio craft. The auction brought $1.1 million and sold 94% by value. Strong results were achieved for works by George Nakashima, Ib Kofod-Larsen, Martin Brothers, Piero Fornasetti, Tiffany Studios, and more. In addition, a new auction record was set for design icon Wharton Esherick.      “Sunday 's sale was a strong showing with great pieces offered. I was very happy with the results and look forward to our October sale for which we have already consigned fine works by George Nakashima, rare Georges Jouve ceramics, and French Art Deco sculpture,” said 20th Century Design Specialist Tim Andreadis.The standout lot of the sale was a rare and important East Indian Rosewood Frenchman 's Cove Dining Table by George Nakashima, which fetched $125,000. It was followed by a Martin Brothers large, salt-glazed stoneware Wally Bird tobacco jar that sold for $46,875 and a Long Chair by George Nakashima, which achieved $43,750. Piero Fornasetti 's rare “Trumeau Architettura” also saw robust bidding before going for $42,250 and a pair of Elizabeth chairs and ottomans from Ib Kofod-Larsen sold for $30,000.An auction record for a three-legged stool made by Wharton Esherick from the Lehrer collection set an auction record for the designer.
