Freeman 's European Art & Old Masters Auction Totals $1.6 Million

The strength of the market was on full display at Freeman 's ‘European Art & Old Masters ' auction on January 28. Twice as many bidders registered for this sale than the department 's previous auction in June 2013. With 93% of lots sold, the sale brought $1.6 million, more than doubling the auction estimate. There was a great deal of interest from collectors, museums and galleries on both sides of the Atlantic in all three sectors of the auction: Old Masters – featuring prints, drawings and paintings, British and Continental fine art.Highlights from the auction include:Old Master/19th century drawings: lot 75, Edouard Manet, "Chat et son ombre," $33,750, a small but impressive drawing by the Impressionist master, lot 5, Follower of Michelangelo, "Satyr from Behind," $37,500; lot 15, Attributed to Charles-Antoine Coypel, "Half Length Portrait of a Seated Woman," chalk on paper, $230,500. Each drawing garnered great interest, easily eclipsing their respective estimates. Old Master paintings: lot 27, Attributed to Gaspar van Wittel, "The Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine," $104,500 and lot 48, Northern Italian School, circa 2nd half 16th century, "Allegory of Poverty and Vengeance," an arch form panel painting set within a lunette, $17,500. Set within a trumeau and owned by a New York collector, "The Colosseum" is an aesthetically impressive work ascribed to the leading veduta painting of his generation and one of multiple versions of the artist 's iconic view. British pictures: lot 73, Montague Dawson, "Nearing Home, The Helicon," $48,750 and lot 74, an important mixed media work on paper by the Pre-Raphaelite Edward Burne-Jones, "Psyche," which realized $194,500, attracting numerous UK-based bidders and besting its estimate by tenfold. Continental pictures: lot 120, Armand Guillaumin, "Rochers sur la cote Mediterraneenne," $33,750; lot 136, Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta, "Portrait of a Lady," $46,875; two fine Polish paintings from a New York estate, lots 138 and 140, Josef von Brandt, On the Lookout, $134,500 and Romain Kramstyk, "Gentleman feasting on Shellfish," $43,750. Rounding out this section of the auction was lot 143, Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht, "Cavalry Procession," $26,250 and lot 145, Peter Ivanovich Petrovichev, "Autumn Landscape," $23,750.
