Fresh to Market Works Highlight Freeman's American Art & Pennsylvania Impressionists Auction

On December 4 Freeman's will be offering a carefully curated selection of fresh-to-market American paintings, drawings, and sculpture to auction. The upcoming American Art & Pennsylvania Impressionists sale features works of art from private collections and estates, most of which are making their auction debut. From vistas of the Pennsylvania countryside to iconic visions of the American West, this auction features some of the most prominent names in American Art, including both N.C. and Andrew Wyeth, Edward Willis Redfield, Frederic Remington, and Fern Isabel Coppedge.

EDWARD WILLIS REDFIELD (american 1869-1965) "ROAD TO THE RIVER" Considered by many to be the greatest artist of the American West, two classic bronzes by artist Frederic Remington, "The Broncho Buster" and "The Savage," set off a section of works highlighting the romance of the American West. These fresh-to-market works from two different Maryland estates are sure to grab a great deal of attention from eager collectors. Also featured prominently is a triptych depicting members of the Blackfoot tribe by German born artist Winold Reiss, an extraordinary work originally created as studies for a mosaic mural slated to be installed in the Chrysler Building.

Freeman's is pleased to once again offer works by father and son artists N.C. Wyeth and Andrew Wyeth. The December 4 sale features several watercolors by Andrew Wyeth representative of the artist's evocative and moody style, including "From a Cushing Window," a work never before seen at auction, and a delightfully personal Christmas card. From his father N.C. Wyeth, comes two dramatic works of illustration art, including a depiction of "The Departure of the Rose (The Mother of the Hero)" initially made as an illustration for Charles Kingsley's novel Westward Ho! or, the Voyages and Adventures of Sir Amyas Leigh, Knight, of Burrough.

Another group of illustrators to be featured in this upcoming auction is a selection of works from "Red Rose Girls" Jessie Wilcox Smith and Elizabeth Shippen Green. These innovative women were among the most commercially successful and highest paid illustrators of their time, and have in recent years enjoyed a growing interest from collectors.

A distinctive group of Pennsylvania Impressionists also feature prominently in this sale, including a number of works by Fern Isabel Coppedge. This leading lady of Pennsylvania Impressionism has become a cornerstone of Freeman's fine art auctions, with more top results for her work sold from here than any other auction house. Works from Edward Willis Redfield and Arthur Meltzer, whose outstanding work "Robes of Winter," (which at its last appearance at auction set a record for the artist) will also be featured. Freeman's is the only auction house with a specialty category dedicated to this collecting genre, and the proven results from past sales of works by these and other Pennsylvania artists has served to reinforce the popularity of the group.
