Tessa Laney serves as Cataloguer and Associate Specialist for Freeman’s English & Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts department.  She specializes in English and French design after 1750, with a particular focus on French furniture and decorative arts from the late-19th and early-20th centuries.

Ms. Laney joined Freeman’s in 2014, first as Consignment Coordinator.  Coming from a museum background, her time in this position served as an excellent introduction to the auction industry and helped strengthen her knowledge across all of Freeman’s specialty departments.

A Philadelphia native, Ms. Laney attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia on a full academic scholarship, where she majored in Art History and Political Science.  She also attended the Savannah College of Art and Design for a graduate program in Arts Administration, with an emphasis on historic preservation and architectural history.  Most recently, Ms. Laney competed a master’s degree in French material culture from the University of London Institute in Paris.

An avid rower, Ms. Laney is a member of Penn Athletic Club Rowing Association and can be found most evenings and weekends on the Schuylkill River.  She also volunteers as the Collections Manager at the Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion in historic Germantown, a quick walk from her 1857 Victorian home, which she enjoys styling with French antiques and vintage prints.
